In 2009, about 27% of auto accident fatalities in Illinois occurred at intersections, and there are laws which regulate intersection-traffic and how approaching drivers should act.
Here is Illinois state law as it applies to vehicles at intersections:
(625 ILCS 5/11-901) (from Ch. 95 1/2, par. 11-901) Sec. 11-901. Vehicles approaching or entering intersection. (a) When 2 vehicles approach or enter an intersection from different roadways at approximately the same time, the driver of the vehicle on the left must yield the right-of-way to the vehicle on the right. (b) The right-of-way rule declared in paragraph (a) of this Section is modified at through highways and otherwise as stated in this Chapter.
Here are the common types of intersection auto accidents:
- Turning accidents – Between 2005 and 2007, turning at an intersection was the cause of over 23% of intersection accidents, according to estimates from the National Motor Vehicle Crash Causation Survey.
- Running stop signs or stoplights – These are often cases of outright negligence which involve reckless driving, intoxicated driving, “road rage,” or a combination of these and can result in serious accidents.
- Uncontrolled intersections – Some intersections do not have signs or lights to direct traffic, and failure to respect the right-of-way rules at these intersections can result in serious and even fatal accidents. In 2009, over 40% of all traffic-related fatalities occurred at uncontrolled intersections.
